What the Regional Center actually does

California's Regional Centers coordinate services and funding for both minors and adults with developmental disabilities. For many families, they become one of the most important sources of long-term support outside of school.

But eligibility isn't automatic, the paperwork is work, and the services your child receives can vary somewhat depending on your Regional Center. Knowing what to ask for matters so you don't get stuck in the system.

Wherever you are in the process

Families come to us at very different points. Here's what support looks like at each one.

New to Regional Center

You've heard the Regional Center can help, but the intake process and eligibility rules feel like a maze. We help with:

  • Intake preparation + documentation review
  • Understanding eligibility
  • Clarifying what supports might be available - and how to ask

Already in the system

Getting in is only the first step. We offer:

  • Guidance preparing for your child's Individual Program Plan (IPP)
  • Help requesting new or expanded services
  • Strategic planning for service appeals, unmet needs, and school age transitions

Ready for Self-Determination

As a certified Independent Facilitator, I guide you through:

  • Person Centered Plan (PCP) creation
  • Individual Budget and Spending Plan development
  • Financial Management Service (FMS) selection
  • Vendor selection and onboarding

The Self-Determination Program, explained

The Self-Determination Program (SDP) gives Regional Center clients more choice over how their services are designed. Instead of relying only on traditional vendored services, you receive an individual budget and greater control in choosing the providers and supports that fit your family.

The appeal is flexibility. The trade-off is complexity.

That's where an Independent Facilitator comes in. Jessica Polonsky offers customized, full-service planning built around your family's actual needs, not just the system's checklist.
